In late December, I withdrew $400 from my savings account, added another $100, and bought a $500 money order from the bank where I have the account. Now, I realize that I have no idea what happened to that money order, nor do I have the receipt. Does the bank have a record of it, and if it isn't cashed, can I recoup the loss? Or am I simply out $500?

the same thing happened to me one time.. If you do not have the receipt, you are pretty much out of luck with the money order. The only way would be to know the exact time and date you bought the money order, but you would still have to have some kind of proof it was you. I argued with the people and explained my situation to them, but i just was out the money for the money order. It would be different if you had the receipt because you could just call and then write the money order place and they would mail you a refund... but i think you are probably out the money on this one

I imagine the bank does have records of that. Most money orders are only good for 90 days, anyway, so they can check pretty easily to see whether it went through or not. I'd certainly ask about it.

I will put it this way; if you have had a good rapport with your bank, they should have a record of the MO purchase. ASK THEM.

IF not, write it off.

CALL the company you sent it to and
ask when they plan on cashing in the MO.

Also, for a mini "savings grace thing--"
your loss is tax deductible on your tax return.

yes the bank has a record of it, and if it isn't cashed, you can recoup the loss, but it takes up to about 6 months

Talk to your bank. The fact that you have an account there will help with the records. You may get more holp than you think.
