I'm a guy, and my junior prom is coming up in less than a week, and I still do not know what I am supposed to wear. The dress code is semi-formal, but I am still not sure what I am supposed to wear. Is a suit mandatory or is a nice dress shirt with a tie sufficient? What kind of slacks/shoes should I have? Thank you!

Semi-formal can be a rented tux, a suit and tie, or just nice pants and dress shoes and a shirt and tie. Sometimes a colored shirt and tie looks just as dressy as a suit. The shoes can be any kind of shoe, I've even seen boys wear tennis shoes with suits and ties before, but I think it looks nicer with dress shoes.
Your date will be wearing a nice dress, either long or short, so you should dress to match her. Find out what color dress she is wearing, and see if you can find a tie that will be a similar or at least complementary color. Don't wear a red tie if her dress is green for example, wear a blue tie or something like that. If she is wearing a red dress, a black shirt with a red tie would look awesome.
I think dark colored slacks, such as black, look best. If they are light colored, they often look more informal, like khaki pants. But then again, tan pants with a dark colored shirt and tie would look great. Semi-formal is really wide open for guys. If you have a sports jacket or vest or sweater to wear over your shirt and tie, you will be very well dressed.

Semi formal for a Prom could mean a grey suit. You can wear the color of your choice. Shoes can be brogues or formal black shoes. you could add a pocket square instead of a regular tie. Make sure it's in contrast with the suit.

semi formal would mean the guys would wear a dress shirt dress pants and a tie. no jacket required. but since its your junior prom, why not go all out? Do it for your date. chicks like that kinda stuff. and they're all about the pictures, so you have to look good for that.
