Most of the top actors seem to make a great job of playing themselves. I'm not saying they're bad actors, it's just that the ACTOR keeps showing up. Like Jack Nicholson... gotta love him... but almost every character he plays is HIM.
So, what actors make you forget the actor that is playing and think only about the character? For me Kate Blanchet and Sean Penn do.

Tom Hanks! Hands down
You have:
“The Terminal” He played a forager who was stuck in an air port learning to speak English.
“Catch Me If You Can” He was a deceive working for years trying to catch up with a brilliant criminal mind.
“Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2” He was the voice of a cowboy doll.
“Apollo 13” He was a father and went to space to save the world.
“Big” He played a boy living in a man’s body and world.
“The Green Mile” He was the sergeant in charge of the death row inmates.
“The Polar Express” He was a man of animation keeping kid’s faith alive.
“Saving Privet Ryan” He was overseeing the rescue of the last living son of a women who has lost two of her boys to the war.
“Sleepless in Seattle” He was a single father who’s son set him up with a women in NY
“You’ve got Mail” The CEO of a bookstore meets and falls in love with a woman on the internet.
“Forest Gump” He is a young man with a very low IQ who becomes a multi millionaire.
And my personal favorite
“Cast Away” Where he had to first gain weight then played out the majority of the movie alone with no one to monolog with other then Wilson the volley ball. Along in the movie he had to loose a lot of weight more then 50 lbs if I’m not mistaken.
And so many other films.
And then there is the fact that he rights and directs some of the best films out there.
Other then Tom, you have Dustin Hoffman and Sean Penn

Gene Hackman.He can play a real dirty villain like "little bill" in the unforgiven then play a really funny character like in heart breakers or the royal tenenbaums

That would be Nicole Kidman and Minnie Driver....for actors......Hugh Jackman and Collin Farrell

if you mean excellent actor and can pretty much do any roles then i muyst say pierce brosnan and sean bean mostly brosnanhes my favorite and my favorite james bond :)
