What is the one thing new writers face to keep them from persuing their dream of writing a book?

The ten gazillion other people out there writing. There are way too many really bad books getting submitted to publishers and agents, tying them up and keeping them from getting through to the great stuff.

Okay honestly............... I think it is the lack of both pay and recognition. I have been working on my current book for two years, several hours per day, and I have not earned one nickle for it and virtually no one except my family is even aware of the project....... A year or two from now I may publish it and only sell 2,000 copies; if that.

I think Moliere or someone said something to the effect that, "Writing is like prostitution. First you do is for yourself, then for some close friends, and then for money".

A lot of popular writers really suck, and a lot of good writers go un-noticed. A lot of great books are neglected while a lot of hogwash books become best-sellers. Typically writers have to have another full time job because simply writing a book every year or two will not bring them barrels of cash.
