I recently began to have an issue with my Compaq Presario 5108US where it would not boot at all. I began to take the computer apart piece by piece and found that the hard drive/cd-rom/dvd all work but only if just the power cable is plugged into them. If the data and power cables are plugged into them the drives refuse to work. Am I wrong for thinking that my motherboard or cpu is bad?

You should verify your data cable if its OK. You may also deal with primary & secondary datacables and jumpers. i think its not the problem of CPU / motherboard.

it really is puzzling to wager the placement yet my money's on the actual shown actuality that the assistance cable top-rated from the motherboard to the hard diskpersistent is at fault - possibly you've knocked this free from thepersistent / motherboard? ok, if it really is no longer this, Get into the BIOS menu. frequently accessed with assistance from urgent 'DEL' or F5 in the course of the first actual few seconds the workstation is powering up. See if it has said the hard diskpersistent (HDD) - if no longer, this confirms the above. If it has, and under no circumstances something looks amiss, it will be a fault with between the boot information, probable BOOT.INI. So, to fix this, you'll favor get admission to to a boot disk or a boot cd. finally you'll opt to move the 'Microsoft fix Console' - this may seem as an selection in the course of the setup procedure. i imagine you get admission to it with assistance from urgent F8 even as brought on. The fix console is waiting even as no action is taking position on the demonstrate screen except for C:> with a blinking cursor '_'. The instructions you want to variety are CHKDSK C: [enter] and stick with the prompts FIXMBR [enter] and do what it says bootcfg /rebuild [enter] and do what it says fixboot c: [enter] and stick with any prompts. those 4 gained't all artwork, because i visit't shop in ideas what works and what doesn't. yet run all 4 and also you should get well a shafted equipment.

What does refuse to work mean? And when you say 'fails to boot', I assume the computer still powers up. If you think the computer works better when you don't have the data cables in, why wouldn't the booting problem be your hard drive?

There may be some device comflicting in it

HDD should be se to MA
CD-drive is to be set to CS
if the above steps fail then connect your HDD but without the CDROM drive and see if it works
