I used to do it alot too!! It's just a habit that a person forms and eventually can't stop because you don't even think about it anymore!! Anyways, I quit when I went to an anatomy course and looked at the bacteria on our fingers...Oh my lord if you want to stop look at your skin under a microscope it's disgusting!!! (There are living organisms from fecal matter and every other dirty persons hands on them!) Think about that when you go to chew...

Theory One=It is supposed to be due to a mineral deficiency. Buy some multi vitamins and drink that. See if the proponents of this theory are right.
Theory Two- Habitual behavior- This is the end result of this habit. finger biting: This can be associated with extremely short fingernails, damaged nail bed, paronychia, oral herpes, herpetic whitlow, damaged dentition, apical root resorption, fractures to the incisors, and gingivitis.
Causes: The origins of most habit disorders are not well established or understood. Some say that this is triggered by stressful conditions in the adolescent who previously learned the behavior as an infant.
Look at it this way. You unconsciously do it. It doesnt give pleasure. It will make your teeth part and youd have to pay a thousand dollars , nay at least three to put the painful braces on. Youll greatly increase your chances to get oral herpes.
Last but not the least, it gives you bad breath.

I chew the skin around my fingernails, which sometimes causes a little of the skin on the sides of my fingers to peel... I just wanted for you not to feel alone... I do have to be honest though, and say that I haven't been able to stop this habit... I also chew on a couple of my knuckles sometimes.
Ick. Heh.

Yes, I do it all the time. I don't however see why I should stop, it's dead skin and they're my fingers!

hang nails! careful, if you rip them, you can introduce harmful bacteria into your skin (my father got a staff infection doing this, and staff infections are aggressive and hard to heal!)
