It makes his parents sound like a couple of goth poseurs.

Its a very good name. Unconventional, and sort of mysterious. I think it's perfect. :)
P.s. I stongly suggest you ignore all negative comments especially ones that say it sounds like the name of devils, vampires, etc.. because let's face it, these names were already 'invented' before the fictional movie characters.
Besides, there's tons of people named Vladimir, in fact, it's a comon name in Eastern Europe. I see no reason why you shouldn't name your child whatever you want just because others associate it with vampires. Any sane person would know that his name being Vladimir doesn't make him a vampire. Any sane person would know vampires don't exist to begin with. Any person who does believe so is a complete idiot whom your child should stay away from anyway.
As for Damien, I see no reason why anyone would associate it with devils except for the fact that it's coincidentialy also the name of an Omen character (wasn't that good of a movie, and I seriously doubt that any children 10 years from now will even have heard of it )
and also its 3 letter changes away from Demon, though that can be said for many other names. However, I don't think this should be a reason for you to change your mind. After all, it's not dEmOn it's dAmIEn.
As for making fun of him, I don't think anyone would want to make fun of a vampire or a demon...heh...
Remember, the person makes the name, not the other way around.

although Damien is still a commonly used name, it still brings about the thoughts of the american movie of the devils child "damien' in The Olmen.

it is definitely not a common one...now you have to think of all of the things that it could be tied to....
Vladimir...hey Ruskie....
Damien...the Omen series...
and then the initials VD (venereal disease)
good luck

vladimir sounds a bit dangerous and serious, and you can't shorten it for when he gets mates at school! I like Damien though...
