People were burned not hanged for heresy, but the threat was enough to keep many silent.
Copernicus did not publish during his lifetime.
Galileo was forbidden to publish any more and held in house arrest by the Church.
Kepler mother was accused of witchcraft, but not convicted.
All three died of natural causes. Galileo was the last scientist to be silenced by the Catholic Church. By that time the reformation had divided Europe and scientist could find refuge in other counties if local authorities persecuted them.

I know of none that was hanged, but Giordano Bruno, an advocate of Kepler, was burned at the stake. Also, Lavoisier was guillotined during the French Revolution. (Which is about as revolting as you can get.)
