What classes should I take in highschool? Which kind of colleges should I go to? What courses(classes) should I take? I either want to do business or UN translating. I want to travel to Japan and France.

Many people tell me that I should go to the country to learn the language. How much does it cost? What do I need to do to transfer or do student exchange?

The obvious advice is take as many language classes as you can and study and travel abroad if you can.

I would also consider taking history classes. Not that they'll do much to develop language skills but they will help you understand cultures and put various human relations into context.

Do you live in an area where there is an immigrant population and a formal center for language learning or maybe a refugee assistance program? Maybe you could volunteer.

It is great that you are planning ahead, but don't stress out so much because you sound like you are doing well and you don't need to put extra pressure on yourself. As a translator, besides having specific language skills, having a broad knowledge base is really useful. It can be easier to do a translation if you have an understanding of the context of the information. So enjoy school, enjoy learning, and tell yourself it all relates in the long run. Good luck!

First of all, stop stressing. Try not to put so much on yourself. You still need time to relax as well. If you want to be a translator, then try taking Latin. Latin is such a base of most of the european languages that it should help. In the meanwhile, just do well in the classes that you have and perhaps join the International Club if there's one at your high school.

talk to your school guidance counselor to make sure your classes are what you need. Do this at college also when that time comes. You can research on the internet what colleges are respected for their foreign language program. Also attempt to meet a translator to see what their job is like. Best wishes for a great future.

I would recommend trying to go to college in the country of which language you want to learn, this way you will have to learn their language so you can understand them. You can talk with your counselor in high school to get ideas of good foreign language colleges, but they might even recommend traveling overseas to another country. My cousin traveled overseas for college and can speak Russian very well, he said it was the best way to learn a foreign language, because he had to know it to make it over there.
