You are still at the point in life when you are figuring out who you are, so pressure to know what you want to do with it, when you're not even in high school, is absurd. Of course you always want to look ahead, but you shouldn't worry too much about what your occupation yet.

Wow, way too much pressure to put on yourself when you haven't even started high school yet! Take it easy - you have a few years before you have to figure this out. Pay attention to the things that you really enjoy doing in high school (working on a project with others, doing detail work, math, writing, etc.) That should give you some clues as to the type of job you may want - why make yourself miserable as an accountant if you hate math?

Most schools have career fairs starting junior or senior year, to help you investigate different professions and industries. You can also do research about companies and jobs on line.

Like the rest of us, you'll probably start out doing some scut job for a while - answering phones, working in a fast food kitchen, stocking shelves - before you figure out what you want to do and have the opportunity to get yourself there.

In the meantime, worry about shopping for school clothes and making sure you get your core classes on your schedule, OK? :)

Good luck!

It's no crime not to know what profession you're going to choose before you start high school. You're still trying to find what you enjoy doing and what skills you're going to have. If you want to get some ideas of what's out there, go to the library and look up a reference book... a Job Handbook. It will list a lot of jobs and what it will take to do well at the job. It also lists the qualifications a person needs and the job duties.

Not every employer will stick to this same definition of what that particular job title is, but it's a starting point. You're at a great stage in your life and you'll be able to pick and choose among a lot of things if you apply yourself while you're in school. Just concentrate on keeping your grades up, and you may want to apply for a scholarship in a couple of years. I was sorely disappointed in myself when I found out that almost all of my friends from high school applied for and got scholarships... while I really hadn't realized that I might be eligible. It all worked out, though. ;)

A lot of employers look at the grade point averages a person has from high school, instead of other factors when they are hiring employees, so that will be the main thing. Just remember that nobody ever starts out on the top rung in a company, and that the beginning pay will not be a lot. You may switch jobs around for a few years before you find what you need and enjoy. That'll be okay, too. You'll do just fine.

Also, there are all kinds of fields in nursing, so you might find one that appeals to you. There are other medical fields that pay excellent wages where a person doesn't have to know nursing. There are pharmacy techs, x-ray techs, dental assistants, medical assistants, medical office people, lab workers (phlebotomists--not sure I spelled that quite right), and a lot of other jobs that pay well but aren't strictly nursing. Another one that comes to mind is medication aide. Those folks work in nursing/rehab hospitals and so on. That pays well, too.

You are still very young. So instead of trying to figure out exactly what occupation you want, you should be discovering what your interests are. They will eventually lead you to the best career path.

So try out lots of things over the next few years, and think about which ones you enjoy doing the most (math, music, business, etc.). Then, when it's time to start college, you'll be in a much better place to determine a more specific job that will be right for you.

Good luck!!

DO NOT start thinking you have to pick one job and keep it for the rest of your life. That is impossible. Its very normal for people to change jobs - some people have 3 or 4 careers in their life time.

Do NOT do what your mother tells you. I made that mistake and have paid dearly for it. I went to college and started doing an accounting degree because my dad was an accountant, and he made good money. I bombed out badly. I should have listened to myself and did the history degree I really wanted to do - and still have not done. Now I have no career and no education and I float from job to job, on low wages. Cant save enough to go to college and I do not want to go into debt with a student loan.

Also you are too young to be under this sort of pressure. However if you want to start thinking about the right career for you - ask yourself this question...

"Which of the following do I love doing the MOST - working with people, working with my hands or working with information. "

Once you have put those in order from most favourite to least favourite - then you can eliminate those careers you KNOW you will detest, and start looking for careers that utilise the area you love the most.

Hey, chill out one: you shouldn't feel pressured into doing anything you don't want to do. Your parents obviously understand that the medical field pays very well and is always in demand, but nonetheless you shouldn't feel pressured. Besides that I have a friend who goes to Berklee college of music and she's studying to be an opera singer, (but maybe that's not what you had in mind?) Anyways don't trip, most colleges let you look around your first year before you actually pick a major. Don't stress yourself out. your are WAY to young for that.

Well i'm a junior in high school this year. I felt the same way that you did going into high school. It's perfectly natural for you to feel this way. I'm on the "AP" track- so I'm in the hardest classes, with the smartest kids. We all feel that pressure. As I approach the end of my junior year, with the colleges that I want ot apply to newly picked out, I do think of what I wan to be sometimes. However, it's not the first thing on my "to do" list. I have already decided that I'll apply "Undecided", because who knows what I'l want to do . My high school doesn't offer a quarter of the courses that I have considered majoring in. Why not explore in college?! So I decided I would. I did consider going into culinary arts- which meant that I would have to go to a culinary arts school. Now that's the type of thing I had to think about for a long time. I eventually decided not to. If you want to be a nurse- I believe you could go to a school specifically for nursing. However- if it's just your mum's idea- don't listen. Follow your heart- and your own dreams. So what if your mother thinks you would be a good nurse. Say "thanks mum" and do like I did. My mother thought I would be and excellent psychologist. My music teacher wants me to major in Vocal Performance...the list goes on and on. I'm sure this won't be the first time someone will tell you to do follow a certain career path. You couldn't listen to all of them at once...could you? Jane Doe is a Psychologist/singer/dietician/polie woman/librarian......well- I've never met Jane Doe. SO follow your heart...do what you want...and don't rush.....I know juniors in COLLEGE that haven't decided what they want to do yet..don't rush...you'll figure it out

You are way too young to be worrying yet about this.

In high school, make sure you get exposed to as many areas as you can. This can help you decide what you like and what you don't. Also study hard and do as well as you can so you can get into more advanced education after you graduate.

Good luck.

Most people have no clue what to do until they are around 30. Focus on your voice and singing. Maybe eventually you'll love something else to. But in the meantime, focus on your passion.
