Rather than cheat and use a calculator, we will solve this one long hand.

3-5/7 – 3-1/6

We need to find a common denominator between the two fractions. The lowest common multiple of 6 and 7 is 42. We will convert the fractions to 42nd’s by multiplying the fractions by either 6/6 or 7/7.

For clarity purposes, I am only showning the fractional part here.
5/7 x 6/6 = 30/42

1/6 x 7/7 = 7/42

Combining the whole number and the new fractions gives us a new equation.

3-30/42 – 3-7/42 = 23/42.

23 is a prime number so we can not simplify the fraction.

To add mixed numbers, first add the whole numbers, which is 3 + 3 = 6

Then add the fraction. Since they have different denominator, find their least common factor (LCD), the number that can be divided by the denominators 7 and 6. Sometimes, the LCD is the product of those denominators. In this case, it is 42 which is 7 times 6.

To check, factor 7 , which are 1, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49
Factor 6, to get 1, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48
From the above list, you can see that 42 is their common factor and it is the least.

You can now add 5/7 and 1/6
which becomes

30/42 + 7/42 ( the LCD becomes the denominator,
the number below, and the new numerator.
the number above, is the product of the
LCD divided by the old denominator, that is
for the first fraction, 42/7 = 6 x 5 = 30.
for the second fraction, 42/6 = 7 x 1 = 7

Since the resulting fraction now has the same denominator, you can easily add it. Just add the numerators , 30 + 7 = 37
and retain the denominator or LCD, to get 37/42. Add this number to the whole number we got earlier, 6

So 3 5/7 + 3 1/6 = 3 30/42 + 3 7/42 = 6 37/42 or
6 and 37/42.

Other solution is just to convert the mixed fraction to improper fractor, find the LCD and ADD. In this case,
3 5/7 becomes 26/7 becomes 156/42
3 1/6 becomes 19/6 becomes 133/42

156/42 + 133/42 = 289/42 = 6 37/42, which is the same answer as the above

3 5/7 - 3 1/6

Obviously, 3 -3 = 0. But what do you do with the fractions?

You need to find a common denominator to make them look alike. Once you do that, it's easy to solve the problem.

So, 5/7 - 1/6

common demoninator is 42

5/7 = ?/42
1/6 = ?/42

======

5/7 = 30/42 (7 goes into 42 6 times; 5 x 6 = 30)

1/6 = 7/42 (6 goes into 42 7 times; 1 x 7 = 7)

======

30/42 - 7/42 = 23/42

So, 3 5/7 - 3 1/6 = 23/42!

the answer is 23/42

convert the mixed numbers into improper fractions, by multiplying the whole number by the denominator and then adding the number to the numerator. 3 5/7 will be 26/7 and 3 1/6 will be 19/6. then the new equation would be 26/7-19/6, change the fractions so they have a common denominator, the GCF (greatest common factor) or 7 and 6 is 42 so mutiply both the numerator and denominator so that the denominator of both fraction is 42. so it would be 156/42-133/42, if do 156-133 you will get 23 so the answer is 23/42.

3 and 5/7 is like having 3 + 5/7
and
3 and 1/6 is 3 +1/6

so you can write it this way:

3 + 5/7 - (3 + 1/6) <<<< distribute the negative sign
3+ 5/7 - 3 -1/6 <<< operate the whole numbers ( 3- 3=0)
0+ 5/7 -1/6 <<< get a common denominator ( 6*7 =42) and operate.
(5*6)/42 - (1*7)/ 42
( 30 - 7 ) / 42
23/42

its easy.....

3 5/7 - 3 1/6

= 26/7 - 19/6

= 23 / 42 #

the threes cancel out. So your left with fractions. Common denominator of both is 42. So its become this:
30/42-7/42=23/42
cannot be simplified.

3 (5/7) - 3 (1/6)

26/7 - 19/6

156/42 - 133/42 = 23/42

again... it will be 15/7 - 3/6 or 1/2....
so.. it will be 15/7 - 1/2
taking lcm.. we get... 30-7 whole divided by 14...
then the answer is 23/14..
