Just a note: SDS is for proteins (the 'detergent' will denature your DNA). Agarose is the type of gel you use for DNA.

DNA is extracted and purified and amplified (using PCR).
The DNA is digested using restriction enzymes (so it is cut up into chunks). Then run on a SDS-PAGE type gel to separate the sections, into shortest to longest. And then the DNA bands are stained.
