I saw him utter good luck to the Bayern Munich players on the second leg in the Knockout round.

I'm guessing he speaks a little English. I think most footballers do. Otherwise how could they argue with Bayern players, I don't think Bayern Players speaks spanish nor does madrid players speaks german. I think they use at least little English to communicate sometimes.

Xavi - real name, Xavier Hernández i Creus - is indeed Catalan, as are Carles Puyol, Lluís Pujol, Cesc Fabregas, and Joan Capdevila, whilst Xabi Alonso is Basque, David Villa is Asturian; many of the other Spanish team players have played for Catalan clubs, Basque clubs and Galician clubs. All these areas - Catalonia, the Basque country, Galicia, Asturias - are areas that have their own regional languages - indeed, the Basque language is so different from Spanish that no one has yet succeeded in finding any other language it is related to - The Catalan players are statistically more likely to speak their own regional language than the others - although David Villa's nickname, "O Guaje" - is Asturian for "The Kid" - but the thing is that ALL of them speak Spanish as well as any regional language. Parallels are found in Wales, Scotland and Ireland, which all have a language of their own, but where every one also speaks English. Patriot: Catalán is NOT a dialect of Spanish; although Spanish and Catalán are related they are separate and distinct languages.
