The same reason food stays fresher in the refrigerator. Keeping them cool prevents bacteria from developing in the water and causing them to rot, spoil, or in in the case of flowers die.

I don't know about all flowers, but I was watching a show over Valentine's day and they said that Rose's will last a LOT longer when in the fridge.

I find the best ways to keep flowers fresh is in a container with a shor spray of bleach. It does not promote growth of bacteria.

probably the same reason people store meat etc in the freezer..."to last longer" DUHH!
