Flea & Stella. How can you say that Glenn and K.K. from Priest were caught up in "the whole 80s thing". They pretty much invented the sound of 80s metal. Sure the album "Turbo" was an attempt to capitalize on the 80s sound but that was just one album. Priest started in the mid 70s and Glenn and KK pretty much laid the groundwork for the future of metal guitar. I question your "metalness" when you say that they arent that good. Without them there is no smith and murray, and there is no hetfield and hammett.

Shannon Hamm & Chuck Schulinder - from Death
Willy Adler & Mark Morton from Lamb Of God
Slash & Izzy Stradlin - From GNR
Malcom & Angus Young - AC/DC
But as for the ones you've got listed there they're all really good guitarists. James Hetfield is a phenominal rythym guitarists & is really good with using powerchords. But Kirk Hammett, unfortunately, is sometimes off time with his solos.
As for Megadeth, they're both really good guitarists as wlel. I pesonally, think from a muscial standpoint, Dave Mustine is a better guitarists than Kirk, though I do like metallica better as a whole.
Adrian & Dave are also pretty good guitarists. They're really good with fast rythyms. Since, Madien is routed in punk.
As for the Judas Priests guitarists, Judas Priest was kind of caught up in the 80's with the scene thing. And were kind of in between. So their guitarists weren't so great.
So I guest out of all four, Dave Mustaine & Marty Friedman.
But. As for all time greatest duo in music check out The Allman Brothers band. Dwyane Allman & Dickie Betts (i think his name) were an incredible duo. i mean incredible. you really need to check them out.
peace & love.

Of those choices...Tipton & KK are my favs, but Smith & Murray with MegaDave & Marty following very closely behind. Hetfield & Hammett are a very distant 4th!
My personal choice would be... Kerry King & Jeff Hanneman

James & Kirk. Metal wasn't very popular or mainstream before Metallica came on the scene. Without them, metal would not be the same as it is today. Metallica had enduring popularity and was one of the first bands to crossover into pop music (i.e. radio play, MTV, etc.). Anyone who survives a pyro technics accident is obviously pretty bad ***.

It's hard to pick between Tipton/Downing or Smith/Murray.
I would give it to Tipton/Downing for two reasons:
Innovation: They were truly one of the first, therefore everyone else on the list owes something to them
Consistency: Unlike the others, they've played together (and only together) throughout their career. That takes some doing.
You missed Schenker/Roth, Schenker/Schenker, and Schenker/Jabs,. btw :)

Out of those 4, Smith/Murray...but the real BEST metal duo was Michael and Christopher Amott from Arch Enemy.

Mustaine & Friedman, just because I listen to their music more than others listed.
A duo that I think that is even better,
Paul Gilbert & Bruce Bouillet
