I own a shop, and have owned a couple of the 53 and 54 Belair's. To use the engine you will have to use an old style bell housing that has the ear type mounts on the sides, and you will have to fabricate the mounts on the frame. Same thing in the front, you would have to weld in a cross member for the front mounts. You may get into too many obstacles to make it work out. Why would you want to use this old motor anyway? They aren't very good engines due to the way they oil, and speaking of oil, you can't keep oil in them! I would find a late model 235, and mount it in the center. If I remember correctly the 53 has a closed in drive-shaft, so you will have to get the engine, bell-housing, transmission in place before you mark where your engine mounts are to be welded to the frame. You really need to change the whole running gear over to the open drive-shaft, and fabricate a cross-member that will work for the transmission mount. A rear end out of anything up to a 57 will work under it. If you are determined to keep it stock, then you will have to either rebuild your engine, or do what I was talking about. Make everything fit, and then weld in the brackets for your motor mounts in the center of the engine. This will work out so much better, and will be the easiest way to go.
I guess what you have in mind is; to put the car back as close to orginal as you can, and to do this you must find a motor that mounts the same way. There are some mounting kits out there to mount it in the front, but it requires welding them in. The choice is yours, and I can understand. If it was my car I would do all I could to keep it as orginal as it can be. The car is worth more that way. The orginal engines weren't that bad of an engine, as I recall I ran the crap out of mine, and it held together pretty good.

You are looking at a lot of major modifications.Not only in changing to a larger engine.The motoer mounts are in different places.The mount is located in the front of the engine, where the newer V8' have them on the side of the block.There will also have to be some rerouting of the electrical harness.The accelerator linkage and tranny linkage will be different and so many modifications if you have the time and money.You will have to shorten or lengthen the drive shaft and maybe even the yoke.Although the 6 cyl. tranny will fit the small block V8.

i would find the same engine that fit the mounts. get a nova clip and put a v8 or get the 235 rebuilt.

i own a repair shop,and you can buy a mount kit for this and put any Chevy engine in it that you want to ,a small block v-8 would be a good one to have in it,i doubt that you,ll find another good one to swap out with that one,those old engines are real hard to come by,and when you do find them there not in that good of shape unless they have been rebuilt but if it was mine id buy a mount kit for it,and put a small block Chevy engine in it,that would be nice,good luck i hope this helps.

if you can find a 53 Olds, they have the same frame, so just switch everything over and use the Olds 303 v8

yes...........you can modify mount,s ...just be sure to make them strong enough......also reinforce your transmission mount....................but if your going to do this it will no longer be stock/original..........so why stay with the 235 engine......unless it,s a matter of finance,s......well either way good luck!
