For virus scanning, frequently ujpdated, on Windows, try AVG (free version) from Grisoft. Or Avast (free edition) from Alwill.

For spyware scanning, also frequently updated, and on Windows, try Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware by Lavasoft.

You'll also need a reasonable firewall for Windows. Zonealarm (free edition) is well thought of and is somewhat flexible.

In each case, you'll have to make sure you have configured the products to suit your needs. You may have to leanr something to do so, nad you'll probably have to deactivate if not remove completely any existing virus, spyware, or firewall software that's on your machine. specifically including those from Microsoft which are not very impressive. And you'll have to make sure you keep up with the updates. Not everyone allows automatic updating, nor should they really, as loading things onto your machine should never be under the control of anyone other than you.

Each of these vendors, and many more, sell higher capacity or fuller featured versions of their products. All are trending toward doing each of the major classes of protection (virus, spyware, firewall) in their more ambitious products.

And some of the freeware versions can be configured for 'automatic scanning' of everything downloaded. This probably sounds attractive, but adding backgroudn tasks to your computer -- and especially Windows computers -- is so often troublesome that I can't recommend it. Schedule a scan late at night or early in the morning, but letting something run all the time uses up memeory, CPU cycles, etc while raising the very real possibility of conflicts with a part of Windows or with some other software (an Office compnonet, perhaps).

Here is a simple tutorial on how to cleanup your computer. They are real basic steps, but it is a good first step to take and will often clean out 95% of the junk (such as spyware, viruses, etc) off your computer. All the tools used are free of use. Here is the link:

Antivirus - AVG Antivirus Free Edition
Antispyware - Spyware Terminator (it provides realtime shield which not many other antispyware programs do, meaning it helps to stop a threat before it enters)
Firewall - ZoneAlarm

You can download the above-mentioned softwares here or you view more info on other security softwares in this website before you decide.

Doesn't your ISP provide you with a free program? I have roadrunner, and I get free antivirus and firewall and spyware programs.

But if it doesn't offer that, you can get AVG for free, it's pretty decent.
