It would be nice to know what year and type the car is. Some older Chevy's for example had a resistor right next to the starter where the wires feed. In line fuse it was called.

However, to check for a shot. take the positive wire off the battery and use a 12V test light,. Stick one end to the terminal and one to the battery clamp. It will light up if something is feeding off your system. Remove fuse by fuse and disconnect things till you find them all then go back at it backwards till you find the short. If one exist.

As far as alternator amps, I suspect the place you bought it should of known this and gave you the right one. Is there anything your running that didn't belong in your car like a receiver amp?

i own a repair shop, and either the wrong amp alternator will cause this or too small of a battery will also do this, its not a short, because if it was they wouldn't work at all,try checking all the ground wires on it also, they will cause it to do the same thing also, and will also make it have dim like lights on it when you use them,id check all of that out before i spent any more money on it,good luck i hope this helps.

Go to your local mechanic, some of the mechanics have a system they plug to your cars brain and they can tell what the problem is. It might cost a lil but hey that's better thant the vehicle stalling on you on the side of the road somewhere.
