Is that a plastic housing??? Regardless, it looks as if someone might have installed the mower blade improperly and it wore the housing down when it rotated. Is there supposed to be a spacer to keep the blade away from the housing?? Or possibly something got caught between the blade and the housing and wore it away.

There was probably something picked up by the blade, a piece of wire or anything, which cause the wear hole in the housing. From the shape of the housing underside, I say yours is a mulching mower. It depends on airflow to properly circulate the cuttings for mulching, with a hole causing a slight interference to that process. Clean the hole and fill it with a silicone filler. It'll be fine then.

Yeah I'd say wire got on the blade, etc...
I'd clean it up and fill it with JB-weld (get it at any autoparts store) might have to use a piece of plastic laying around or metal to fill in the large space.. but the jb will make a good tuff patch (better then the plastic)

nope, you wore that hole in it...probably by hitting a rock or stump, and twisting or bending your blade. Shouldnt hurt anything though.
