the difference will only be seen if you are doing some processor intensive task running. Encoding, video rendering, and other things, things are quite processor intensive, and in that case, the Core 2 Duo 1.83 GHz will be faster. This is mostly due to the slightly improved architecture. If you are just word processing and surfing the Internet, then there will be practically no difference, and it isn't worth the extra $100. it is like a 64

Intel Core Duo processors are 32-bit which means that they can only process 1/2 the amount of commands at once as a 64-bit processor. Intel Core 2 Duo Processor are 64-bit and generally have higher processor clock speeds.

They are basically the same thing . . .a single processor with two cores which produce about 40% more processing speed.
A core solo is a single core processor.
