At what age? With objects other than hand (belt, etc.)? How much ? Does your culture play a role in your belief? If you spank, have you ever known you were too rough?

I am writing a paper on society's views on discipline - not punishment. I enjoyed your comments and will unofficially quote some of you - for example, the person who suggested only hitting the buttocks - as one who was spanked often, rarely as I jumped did I only get spanked on the buttocks, additionally, I was surprised at how many of you reacted sexually to this question. Spanking never taught me the values it was intended to - I cleaned my room for fear of a spanking not because I valued order or responsibility - because I didn't want my mom to hurt me. I manage 20+ kids for 8 hours a day without touching a single one - somehow I have to try harder to educate them on proper behaviors and cannot release my frustrations on your child. no, it's not ok, and has been proven to be the least effective form of discipline - I've been spanked, of course, it was normal when I was young, with belts or wooden spoons, but my education in child development has taught me ( as well as experience) that it is useless, however it is done, and actually is mental abuse, even just a single "tap on the bum" has lifelong consequences for a child, and develops fears of being approached in certain ways etc.

First of all as you have stated...do not use your hand.
Use a wooden spoon or other instrument that will not harm the child.

Strike only the buttocks...NEVER ANYWHERE ELSE.
Do not spank when you are angry.

It is an event,and will take time to do correctly..don't be lazy.
Do be consistent...so as not to confuse the child.
Sit the child down first and discuss what he/she did wrong..make sure first that the act was dissobedience and not ignorance.
Spankings should be administered by parents or guardians only.
After the event,hug and love the child,reassure them that they are forgiven and that you as a parent are also imperfect.

I believe it is wrong in most cases. To me spanking is sexual. To think that people get turned on by the same thing that I use to punish a child is revolting to me. If parents stuck to their guns when they said they'd take away this and that, it would work. But most parents don't stick to what they say and the kids never learn their lesson. Though if a child is being particallarly horrible and tried every thing possible. If spanking may be the only way, yes, do it.
