Matter is the physical manifestation of energy. In short order, it is the stuff that physical objects are made of.

Matter consists of atoms and subatomic particles, molecules and chemical substances.

Matter can be converted to energy and vice versa.

the easy answer is matter is anything that has mass.

what matter is "made" of is currently something that physicists are actively working on. The answer would probably lead to a "theory of everything".

I personally believe, although I don't understand all the mathematics involved and have no evidence for it, that matter is space-time wrapped up in a certain way. (Einstein showed that matter curves space-time, I say that space-time is curved because it has been scrunched up into matter.)
