What part of Fort Worth? There are many really nice places. I'll list some of my favorites. Not all of them are strictly inside of the FW border, but they are all in the neighborhood.
1. Trinity Park, just off of University Drive. Exit I-30 at University and go north a mile or two. It's alongside the Trinity river (which has been cleaned up dramatically in the last 20 years to the point where they stock trout in it in the winter at Trinity Park). There are tons of nice trees and grass where you can put down a blanket and watch people and the river.
You can also take your roller blades or bikes and ride north or south on the Trinity Trail. If you go south, you can jump off just across from University village shopping center, cross the street, and have an drink or snack at Starbucks and check out the shops. The trail runs about 7 miles south, and maybe 5 miles north.
2. Botanical Gardens: This is very near Trinity Park, but has a more elegant feel. It's absolutely beautiful.
3. It's not technically Fort Worth, but very close to Fort Worth, just eastward, is River Legacy Park in central Arlington. It is also huge, and very pretty. It's alongside a different branch of the Trinity River. The bike trail there is more narrow, and not nearly as long, but it's more of a nature trail, appearance and atmosphere-wise. It's nice for a long walk.
4. Also not technically in Fort Worth, but very close, is lake Arlington. All of these places are quiet and relaxing, but the lake is quieter and more relaxing than the other 2 places. There's a beautiful park and lake access and parking area that you'll find by taking Arkansas Lane westward. It will run right into it. I'd suggest you explore the lake using google maps with the satellite setting on, so that you can actually look at the lake on the internet.
Hope you find a great place and have a nice picnic.
- Kevin
PS - Regardless of where you go in Texas, no matter where it is, you'll need to contend with the possibility of fire ants. I'd get around this by getting a plastic tarp for under the blanket that would extend a little past the blanket in every direction and weight it down with some rocks or something else. Or, you could take your camping chairs. Bottom line is, there's always a chance of finding these terrible little critters anywhere you go if you are sitting on or near the ground.
