Redneck, in modern usage, predominantly refers to a particular stereotype of people who may be found in many regions of the United States or Canada. Originally limited to Appalachia and the American South, and later the Ozarks and Rocky Mountains, this stereotype is now widespread in other states and the Canadian provinces. The word can be used either as a pejorative or as a matter of pride, depending on context.

Usage of the term "cracker" generally differs from "hick" and "hillbilly" because crackers reject or resist assimilation into the dominant culture, while hicks and hillbillies theoretically are isolated from the dominant culture. In this way, cracker culture is similar to redneck culture. [2]

To find the "literal" meaning of the term...redneck..you need look no farther than down on the farm. It became a slur to farmers used by upper class because a farmer spent all day in the fields, bent over in the sun which caused them to have sunburned/tanned necks.
So if you are a person who works out in the sun all day, be proud if anyone calls you a redneck because you worked dang hard to earn it!!!!

Has to do with hard working farmers... being bent over with their necks facing the sun causeing them to have sun burn all the time... a red neck if you will. Now a days it is a term used for counrty folk, white people etc. , streyotyped by tight jeans flannels and muddin' in their pick up trucks...and so on...(at least it is that way where I live)

the quotes below are from the link in the sources area

"Used as a disparaging term for a member of the white rural laboring class, especially in the southern United States.
A white person regarded as having a provincial, conservative, often bigoted attitude."
"redneck

A slang term, usually for a rural white southerner who is politically conservative, racist, and a religious fundamentalist. This term is generally considered offensive. It originated in reference to agricultural workers, alluding to how the back of a person's neck will be burned by the sun if he works long hours in the fields."

When farmers plowed their fields all day, the backs of their necks were red from the sun. Thus, the red neck was born. They are mainly from rural areas. Do you buy that?
