Osmotic killer in high concentrations. Will rupture cell walls. Alcohol wipes do this. In solution, it is a poison. 0.3 % by wt. will kill people and no doubt most animals and bugs.

Ethanol in low concentrations affected aerobic growth of two strains of Staphylococcus aureus. Cell wall changes is also partly responsible for the antibacterial action of ethanol
