I have the motor, its an old vertical 16hp kohler that came out of a riding mower, which is pretty rare because most mower engines are horizontal. anyway i want to know where to get started, how do i build a frame, the suspension. i know absolutely nothing about how to build it, any good websites or books i should look at?

That vertical engine may be a problem. However, I'd suggest you check out the site I've listed below.

Yeah, the vertical engine might be hard unless you make it a front engine and have a belt driven to the rear with a lawn mower rear end. The plus side is you could have a clutch and gear speed shifter.
