Your dad should really think about putting that dog down. But you have to put yourself in his shoes, he probably doesn't want to put her down because he would miss her.

Why do u call the poor dog retarded? How able minded would u be if u were blind and deaf and if u live long enough, u to may be afflicted with arthritis. You might try showing a bit of kindness and sympathy toward an old dog and make her last days a little more pleasant. Put ur hate aside, a kind word and a pat on her head doesn`t cost a penny. Not to be nasty, but I find ur question very cold and cruel. I hope u aren`t treated the same when u become elderly. Feed ur cat in a separate room, cut back on her food and take up the bowl as soon as she is done eating.

First, cat food is VERY bad for dogs. It has too much vitamin A and is hard on their livers. If the dog cannot see put the cat's food up high.
Second, not every diet food works on every cat. The same with people, not every diet program works on every person. Prescription diet foods actually increase the cat’s metabolism and help with weight loss. You should also have your cat checked for diabetes. A cat continuing to gain weight is a sign of diabetes. So is drinking a lot and urinating a lot. You should also spend some quality playtime with your cat. An active cat is more likely to burn calories. I have a 14-year-old cat who thinks that she is an official pillow tester. I encourage her to do some activities. For example, I live on the second floor. My mailbox is in an enclosed stairway. I carry her downstairs with me and make her walk back up stairs. She wouldn’t go down unless I scared her or carried her. I also use some catnip bubbles/oil on some of the cat toys. This encourages her to play. When she does, she gets a lot of exercise.
As for your dad and his dog, I would explain to him that the dog being happy when he is there is not quality life. If she has to be carried up the stairs, and has so many health problems, it is better that she be put down. I also do not think that she is retarded, animals do not normally suffer from that sort of problem, it is probably just age. It is very difficult to have a pet put to sleep especially one you have had for 15 years. I would explain to your dad that it is cruel to keep her going just for his companionship. Tell him to put himself in the dog’s place. If he was 108+ years old was deaf, blind, in pain, and incontinent, would he be happy. The honest answer has to be no. Your dad needs to understand her suffering. He needs to understand that your motive for putting the dog down is for that reason. He should spend time, as much as he needs to say goodbye to his dog. If he cannot actually take the dog in to the vet, offer to do it, or get someone else to do it. He can request the body (in most states), and have the dog buried in a pet cemetery. He could also have the dog cremated and keep the ashes. He should also do something in memory of the dog. He can donate money to a charity in the dogs name, plant a tree, etc. He needs to tell the dog goodbye in his own way. It will take time for him to get over the dog, and you shouldn’t rush it. I would not recommend a new pet to replace the dog for at least 6 months. This will give him time to grieve and won’t be getting a pet just to replace the emptiness. This is the worst reason to get a new pet.
I hope that this helps. Good luck with both animals.

1. Put the cat food up where the blind/deaf dog can't reach it. Of course it will eat any food it can reach. Put out only what the cat needs or the vet recommends to lose the weight.
2. You need to learn a little compassion for the dog. The poor thing has enough problems. If it is your dads dog he should be the one to decide when it is time.
3. A pet is not a disposable item, to be discarded when it becomes inconvenient to you. Part of the responsibilty of owning a pet is caring for it when it becomes old and has health problems.

Separate the animals a food time and remove any uneaten food after 15 minutes. A fresh food diet without all the preservatives and junk in canned food is good for arthritic dogs. She may very well be a happy dog..... so what if she is blind and deaf..... that ma make people uncomfortable to see her struggle a bit, but would the put down grandma for the same reason??
