Say, for example, someone you just know on the Internet, some email pal, helped you in some small way. Do you just say "thanks" or do you try to find something you can do to pay them back? Do you automatically send them a "thanks" card by email or do you recall that with their slow dial-up maybe those stupid e-cards are annoying to some folks? Does it depend on how well you know the person with you not feeling any sense of obligation if you don't really know them?

I think a simple thank you is sufficient. Personally if I have done someone a favour and they want to pay me for it, it takes away my pleasure in giving. Id be most happy if they thanked me and said they would pay it forward.

It all depends on the kind of help they gave, the degree of difficulty and value to you, that sort of thing. I'd guess that 99 times out of 100, a simple "thank you" is enough. I mean, I help people all the time and, like most folks, I'm doing it just to be nice. I'm not expecting anything back.

However, naturally, if a chance to pay them back presents itself then you should jump on it and do it. Example, assume someone once gave me some valuable information here at Yahoo Answers. If they were to answer a question that I posted and gave even a halfway reasonable answer, then I'd award them "best answer" even if others said something similar in their answer and posted first because I'd feel like it was a way to say "thank you."

Or "pay it forward." Say thanks then vow to help someone else!

No. Unless an agreement is made ahead of time, I owe nobody anything. I realize this is an unorthodox view, and I have irked more than a few people by pointing it out when they thought they were owed something they weren't. I don't sweat it. I don't need people in my life who are always thinking in terms of obligation.

sure - a thank you e-card is perfect for situations like this - it's more than a mere "thank you" (cause you took the time and trouble to put together the stupid e-card!) and at the same time you're not really going out of your way..

If it is a favor then no....but you should be available to help folks out should some need arise. A nice thank you card should suffice.

Just a thanks e-card would be enough. And I would remember they helped me, should they need my help sometime in the future. But I wouldn't go out of my way to find something I could do for them.

It depends what they did. But I always like to do little things for people. I like e-cards. Send a funny one to make them laugh. It might brighten their day.

I always feel that way even with close friends. If someone helps me out.... I pay them alittle something.
most of the time they won't take it so you get to keep your money but also feel good that you offered.

If it involves money, that's when I do something for them in return. Such as a gift, or spotting you for cash, but you don't have to do something for every little favor.
