A lot of people thought that Winthrop was pretty good. They played several top teams, but their only bad losses against top teams were to Texas A&M and Maryland. They played UNC and Wisconsin very close.
All the sportscasters had Winthrop as their "upset special", and they came through. I think all the buzz about them caused a lot of people to pick them in their brackets. I don't think Winthrop is quite as good as they are made out to be by the media, but they are a solid team, and can beat just about anyone if they play really well.

Winthrop could have been seeded higher. This team came into the tournament with 18 straight wins, plus the only teams to beat Winthrop are in the top 14 RPI.
Also 3 wins over teams in the tournament, had lost close games the last years in the NCAA.
Have 4 seniors starting

When Winthrop is hitting their three pointers they can give problems as shown in their early game with Carolina. The Heels had not settled their roster and came in expecting Winthrop to lay down and they didn't. They lost to each ranked team they played and lost to Maryland as well who was ranked later on in the season. They are just proof that on any given night any team can win. They matched up well in their early game but don't let them get in foul trouble no bench hardly at all.

The media kinda hopped on the wagon with Winthrop, saying that they were a dangerous team with a realistic chance to beat more well-known teams. They were proven right in the first round.
I don't see them as a Final Four team or anything like that, but they are a good team. The team that beats them will have to come to play ball.

The teams they have lost to have all been nationally ranked. Even thoug there conference isn't the toughest, they did the business and were undefeated in conf play. They have a solid group of seniors with 2 getting invites to pre-NBA draft camps. They have a legitimate big with 3pt range and high scoring guards. And they have a coach who knows how to win with this group.
