Because we are out of the habit of bartering goods. This is partly due to the complexity and specialization of our economies. Let's just say, however, as a college advisor, that I would starve if I simply tried to subsist off of my own work. I need someone to raise grain and vegetables and fruit and livestock for me to eat since I don't have the resources to do so myself. Furthermore, those that raise these resources might not be interested in my services for years at a stretch since I am really only focused on a small portion of a person's life. So my trade is an indirect one (let alone the other intermediaries of supermarkets and distributors that make the trade more convenient).
That all said, without money, we would not be able to accomplish some of the more fascinating achievements of the 20th (and 21st) centuries and maybe much earlier because we just couldn't be as specialized if we spent large chunks of time raising our own food, building our own shelter, making our own clothes, and so on and so forth.
I visited Amish country - Berlin, Ohio to be precise - recently and noticed that even people living a "simple life" are relatively dependent on "the English" to protect their lifestyle, although they do come about as close to self-sufficient as you're going to find.

I have noticed that some people seem to think that their worth and value in life is based on what material items they accumulate. (cars, homes, clothes, expensive brands, etc)
They look at someone who is poor or havent accumlated these items, or the more expensive brands of these as failures or beneath them.
In actuality, noone takes any of these material items with them when their time comes to leave the world, and they have impressed noone.
Doesnt the bible say something about the least of them will have the most, those at the bottom will be at the top in heaven.
Anyway, money is important to so many people because they want to impress other people and appear better than someone else.

Because ALL people make money "mean" something. People make having money meaning. People make not having money meaning. Ask yourself what do I mean when I say someone has money or someone has no money.
People may make money mean power, prestige, success, knowledgable, desired, etc.
Consider what people make money mean emotionally.... stressed, humble, happy, greedy, etc.
Now consider the gazillion meanings people have created about money and how these meanings dictate who we are, what we do, who we interact with, where we go, what we buy, what we want etc.
What is real crazy about this? The "meaning" we give to money always comes from a context of comparison.
Sorry a bit deep but worth thinking about.
Most important. Understand money doesn't mean anything!
Money is simply Paper!

Money is very important now because we are in a big hole right now. We are defending the world against terrorism, Gas prices are really high and we need to get away from oil, our economy is really bad and the government is in dept to about 3 trillion dollars and still spending. That is why money is so important.

Let's say that you don't worry about money. That you trust that the universe will provide what you need. That requires faith....
Let's say you worry about money...it becomes your primary motivation for living. It is a goal you can put your hands on. You don't have to believe in goodness, love or others.
Being obsessed by money is easier that believing in the fact that the universe will provide.

One person lives in a house, eats three meals a day, gets good medical care, has clean clothes to wear and a warm bed to sleep in each night. The other person goes to bed hungry and cold on a different street corner each night. Does that help to answer your question?

People can become addicted to money--just as they can become addicted to anything else. Once they have some, they need more, and more...
Some people have died with their matresses full of money--while they nearly starved while alive. Some people invest, and invest--and never live to enjoy any of their money.
