No. You cannot seperate Rose the Player from Rose the Manager.
He bet on baseball. He was banned for life from baseball because of that.
He does NOT belong in the HOF.
Edit: Its fascinating to read thru the other answers.
1) There is a little bit of difference between betting ON BASEBALL GAMES and going to Vegas or Atlantic City (wherever Chuck Barkley goes) and betting on card games.
2) No one ever claimed it was the "pope" HOF or something ridiculous like that. There is a specific rule posted in all major league clubhouses that says "You shall NOT associate with gamblers" and it comes from the 1919 Black Sox scandle. Rose did that, and because of that he was banned from baseball for life (a ban he willingly signed). Because he was banned from baseball he was also banned from the HOF.
3) Yes racists (Ty Cobb) and drunkards and womanizers (Babe Ruth and a good deal of other players) are in the HOF. That has nothing to do with Rose' situation, as being a racist, drunkard or womanizer had very little to do with possibly throwing a baseball game.
4) Last I checked Darryl Strawberry, Sammy Sosa, and Mark McGwire are not in the HOF.

It is my opinion that both Pete Rose and Joe Jackson should both be in the Hall of Fame. However, I also believe that Rose should remain banned from baseball. I have always believed that the Hall of Fame is for the fans, and a way to preserve the history of the game. Regardless of what Rose did as a manager, his dedication and hard work that he put into his playing career can never be questioned. He was one of the greatest players to ever play the game, and has set numerous records, some that may never be broken. He deserves the Hall of Fame, however I believe that on his plaque, it should state that he was banned from the sport for life for betting on his team.

Absolutely not!! Rose is the scum of the earth. It might even have been a different story if the guy had been honest with everyone from the beginning. Instead he lied, tried to manipulate those around him and generally blamed everyone else for his short comings.
I had the misfortune of meeting this guy during a little league home runs derby at the Vet in Philadelphia many years ago. I've never met a more unpleasant individual in my life. Very full of himself and unappreciative of the fans who have made him a wealthy person. The hall of fame is better off without him.

How can someone say he belongs in jail? He didn't do anything illegal. It was only immoral in some people's eyes.
He is the all time leader in hits, ALL TIME LEADER! He did something that a lot of people think is wrong, but HoF status shouldn't be decided by people's faults, but by their merits and success and achievements.
As far as Pete Rose the person goes, I could care less. The night he was on the Late Show with David Letterman he made a comment about how Ryan Howard should be the MVP, and Dave asked about Pujols. Rose said they should have an Hispanic MVP for him. Pete Rose was on the Big Red Machine, that had blacks, whites, hispanics, and was the most diverse team at the time as far as ethnicity is concerned and he says Hispanic MVP.
I say as a player/manager yes on the HoF. As far as a person goes he should be ashamed.

Since this is obviously a question for opinions - I say no. His numbers say yes - but there is more to the Hall of Fame than numbers - Pete let his fans down, his club down, and that doesn't say Hall of Fame material to me.

Why shouldn't he be in as a player? He has the most hits ever. There is no question about his qualifications. If he's so banned from baseball, why not remove him from history? Record books, team rosters, pictures, everything. That is what baseball is doing by not letting him in the hall. Sure, other people can talk about his betting, but it was common in the early part of the century, it just took a World Series being thrown for something to happen.

Yes if we are voting on the best BASEBALL players then Pete Rose definately deserves to be in after all he does have the most hits then anyone to ever play the game. Some people let the whole betting thing get in the way of how good of a ball player he was.

Pete Rose SHOULD be in the baseball hall of fame. As a player he did it all.He always came to play and never cheated baseball fans.I remember to this day people flocking to their TVs to watch his 44 game hit streak. I remember him taking out Indians catcher Ray Fosse at home plate in a All-Star game when players chosen to play, played and didn't disappoint the fans. He should get in as a player.

yes. the all time hits king should be in Cooperstown. if they're gonna keep him out for morality issues, baseball writers need to climb down off that high horse and re examine the flaws of George Ruth, Ty Cobb, and so on. It's the baseball hall of fame, not the "pope" hall of fame.
