I know this sounds totally off the wall, but as a teacher i can say the cheapest pet is to get a colony of mealworms. You layer some newspaper, leaves, oatmeal and occasionally throw in some apple peels, potato parts, and they will mature, breed, lay eggs, die and start the cycle over and over again. when the bedding gets dry, just spritz some water over it. A teaching buddy had her colony for over 17 years before she got rid of it.
She gave it away the year before she retired. They are pretty neat to watch.

When it comes to giving "quality" pet care, there is no "cheapest". No matter what type of pet you get, there will always be expenses. But as far as which might cost the least to purchase, a goldfish or Betta fish are the least in cost to maintain. ALL pets do take time and care and keeping their area/tank/bowl clean.
As far as 4 legged, furry pets, there is no cheap. Even a hampster will eat you up in supplies for it's cage.

My Tarantula is the least expensive pet I have ever owned. She is pinkish fuzzy and facinating to watch burrow underneath her bark chips and log. She eats about 12 crickets a month that I toss into her a few times a month, other than that keep it misted inside the tank with a water sprayer. She is in a 15 gal terrium with a mesh lid, she can not get out and when I have people over they are facinated as well. Once you get the tank, bark, log and whatever you want in the terrium, plus your spider your all set. Plus she is quiet, wont claw the furniture, wont bark and pee the floor, doesnt need walking or have costly vet bills. I do have a large high maintenance fish tank, 3 dogs, 2 cats and have fostered birds and other critters, the spider is by far the easiest and cheapest.
I rescued her from being tossed out into the lawn by someone who could not keep her and she would have died in our climate, she has lived with me over 2 years. Her name is Willow.
Oh I have also noticed a lot of people said beta, well I have those to, and I have to clean those out a lot and I have never had to clean out Willows tank, it is very clean and does not smell.

A beta fish in a small tank. They are easy to maintain and are hardy little creatures! The start up cost is the most expensive... tank, pebbles, food, and plants. You can get a nice setup (under 5 gal tank) for under $60.
Good luck!

I'd say a beta fish. You can put it in a small bowl of water, and the only maintenance is cleaning the bowl once a week. And the food is cheap. You don't need to filter the water or put any enzyme killers in it. Get a small net, scoop the fish out and put it in a temporary bowl while you clean the original. I keep mine in a large vase.

goldfish are the cheapest. go to any carnival and you can get them for free with a ping pong ball. but any other fish needs a REAL aquarium. the goldfish only needs a bowl and food. no need to take it to the vet, just flush it ande win another at the carnival.

One that dies after a year or one that lives life to the fullest?
If you're looking for a cheap animal i'd say fish -last a max of three years and don't cost that much. food doesn't cost much either because they don't eat very much...Good luck
