I have a 2001 maxima automatic and it just recently started downshifting harsh..i feel it when it downshifts at 60km/h and when it downshifts to first..its very evident its downshifting!

Once i accidently put it into reverse rather than neutral from drive and the car shut off...was that a safety feature or was there some damage down? I quickly put it back into neutral though. This happened more than a month ago though.

Any help would be deeply appreciated!

Transmission fluid and filter might need changing

Change the fluid, and filters first, if that don't help disconnect the battery cables and let the vehicle set for about 15 minutes to erase the memory and codes from the computer and reconnect the cables, drive the car and see if that helps.

As for accidently shifting into reverse a vehicle will normally stall due to the abrupt change in the direction of the torque converter and other related parts. This isn't really a safety feature, but unless the vehicle has a stall converter, that will happen consistantly on a vehicle that is shifted from drive to reverse. No damage caused by the accidental shift, but its not recommended that it be done as it will eventually damage the transmission.

I would bet on a transmission problem.

My husband and I had a similar problem, shifting hard and slipping out of gear. We were low on transmission fluid, but about a week after filling it back up (3 qts low), it started to act up. I dont know much after that, cause I totaled it.

We did drive a car that shifted hard into a high gear, and a low gear. Figured it was a transmission fluid problem, however TWO mechanics I trust very highly said nope, something in the transmission is about to go.

If you have the money, take it into a WELL KNOWN transmission shop, tell them what its doing, and have them look over it. Its easier to fix the problem while its small...

i own repair shop ,and you could have did some damage to it by accidentally doing this, but it sounds like either a detente cable is stretched out on it,or it may need a good servicing, have a good transmission mechanic drive it and look it over a hands on opinion might save you some money on this one, good luck i hope this helps.
