Many years ago I injured my ankle, and ever since then it has had a tendency to swell. My Dr. says I have arthritis from the injury. This has gotten worse, so that now at the end of the day I have a grapefruit-sized ankle. It doesn't really hurt alot, but is very painful to the touch if I press on that joint bone. Anything I can do to keep it from swelling like this?

Your doctor should have referred you to a arthritis specialist, a chronic pain specialist, a physical therapist, and/or other professionals. You do not need referrals in most cases unless your insurance insists on them. If you need referrals, tell your doctor that you want to go to a specialist. If he/she does not want to do that, that means you need a different doctor. Do not make excuses for your doctor's ignorance, find another doctor who is willing to help you and will not give up until you get the help you need. You are the boss not your doctor.

You need to wear support hose or an ace wrap on that ankle and use anti-inflammatory meds like ibuprofen or naproxen.
