Praise is a very good reinforcement for several reasons; it builds self-esteem, it is not something that you have to pay for, it does not reinforce materialism. Using anything that also builds character, kindness and caring and sportsmanship is important. There are many suggestions on teacher sights, have you tried those?

Philosophical One, you totally just described my least favorite teacher and my favorite one, hahaha that's so cool.
I think one of the best things a teacher can do is actually care about their students. My favorite teacher actually talks to students about how they're doing, and she actually told me to zip up my coat once, which no one has done for about 3 years hahaha. My least favorite teacher, on the other hand, actually gave each of us in my class a number that we are supposed to write on all of our assignments. Yes, he gave us NUMBERS. And he is the most impatient person I've ever met. Erghhh.
So yeah. Praise is good in moderation. However, I actually like it sometimes when a teacher never praises anyone. My math teacher, for example, has complimented me once in like my entire life. But if a teacher is constantly complimenting me I find it annoying. I guess it depends on the student though.

Negative: Too many tests (make students nervouse, lousy, lazy, and less wanting to do homework)
Positive: Homework. A good student that wants to learn appreciates homework and sees it as a good tool to progress with their learning.
It takes a lot to achieve success =)
