I do not know much about cars, but I think that my engine is getting too hot. My coolant temperature gauge stays a little above the middle point, not near the red line. My add-on water temperature gauge usually reads 210 degrees, but I wouldn't say that the gauge is trustworthy.

After going for a short drive (less than a mile), and parking the car in the garage it feels hot, and I can smell the smell of a "hot engine" - not burning oil smell.

My coolant level in the reservoir is just a tad bit below full hot and right on the "full cold" level.

I plan on flushing out the radiator/cleaning the radiator tomorrow.

Is my engine too hot or am is it just my personal thinking?

I drove the car over 20 miles in 80 degree weather today and had no problems.

Purchase a magnetic base thermometer that registers at least 300 deg. F.

Place it on your engine block. When you suspect the engine to be operating above normal, check the thermometer.

you do know your engine is designed to run from 195 to 212. water boils at 212 without being under pressure. Water under pressure doesn't boil till about 240 to 260. But if your that concerned, do as you suspect. Or even think of adding a 3 or 4 core radiator. But I think your fretting over nothing at 210. Make sure your radiator veins are also flushed out. Perhaps at the car wash.

i own a repair shop, and i think you may just need to have everything flushed out real good ,on it and have a new thermostat put in at,most of the time that will cool it down some, other than that keep a real close watch on the heat hand ,and also listen to see if you hear the cooling fan coming on,this may not be working right either,id have someone take a look at it and give me a hands on opinion of it,they will be better to give you a more accurate answer than we can on her about it,good luck,i hope this helps.
