While watching NCAA March Madness, the commentators talk about transition quite often. What do they mean?

"Transition" is when a team is switching from offense to defense or defense to offense.

When a commentator talks about how a team is good in the transition game, they mean that a team is good at taking advantage of opportunities during transition, like fast breaks, pressing, inbound steals, etc.

The term transition (as stated above) refers to the change from offense to defense and back again. Today's game, especially NCAA, is so fast and athletic that teams cannot make a basket and run to the other end to wait for the other team's offense, as they did in the past. A team must be prepared to immediately shift from a made basket to defending the entire court. Once a turnover is achieved or the opposition scores, you must immediately shift into a full-court strategy to attack the opposing team's defense.

That's transition basketball.

The period in which a team goes from offense to defense or vice versa. It's like this: team scores -> transition -> their turn on defense. Transition is the time in between the two

I believe it is when one team gets a rebound and "runs" to their end trying to score "in transition", like what they used to call a fast break.
