It is all about convenience in India and it also depends whether it is urban or rural India. Most of the people in Metropolitan ,urban and semi-urban cities in India wear western clothes. Traditional dress is worn both by men and women for family, religious and other social occasions. Traditional Indian clothes are phasing out , except for specific occasions.

I agree with Ken L, men wear shirt and pants, women are generally more traditional. Although depends where you are, once you hit Goa women are in western clothing a lot more than anywhere else I saw.

Men tend to dress in Western clothes- slacks and shirts.
Women tend to dress in Indian clothes (especially if they don't want to be overly groped by the men).
