No. Emo is emotional hardcore, a subgenre of punk. Rites of Spring(1st emo band), Sunny Day Real Estate, Moss Icon, Fugazi, etc., these are examples of emotional hardcore. MCR sound nothing like these bands and aren't punk. They have some punk influence that was especially evident in the first 2 cd's, but not punk. I think it's best to label them just an alternative rock band, Or even post-hardcore. But they are a kick *** band, and my favorite, no matter what genre. And Gerard has said lots of times they aren't emo. Look at the youtube videos.

Wikipedia says MCR are an Alternative rock band. I'd say they are definately not gothic, but could pass as emo.

MCR is a metal band..

i wouldnt call them "emo" or "gothic."

they are pretty hardcore though..

and I'd suggest[not being mean] that you do not classify bands as emo.. or gothic.. some people would jump on you for saying that.

No they're not emo. Gerard has described the band's music to be violent pop music, or punky pop, but not emo. Emo stands for emotive hardcore which was a genre of music in the 80s that died out in the 90s, so they couldn't be emo anyway. The bands that are labeled emo today are bands that have lyrics about being hopeless and having no way out of your problems except for suicide, and if you listen to their music, espescially their new CD, they're the exact oppostie. They're helping people get out of commiting suicide, not encouraging people into it.

According to the band themselves, they are NOT emo. And I'm going to go along with whatever they say, cuz the band knows best ;)

each CD has it's own genre...
- I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love was definatly gothic...i mean Christ, they thought they were vampires!
- Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge was Pop. When you have more than two songs on one CD that play on a pop station regularly, you're pop (1. Helena, 2. I'm Not Okay [I Promise], 3.The Ghost of You)
- The Black Parade is very alternative. Listen to "House of Wolves" and "Teenagers" and you'll know what I mean. It's on the edge of pop though. "Welcome to the Black Parade" and "Famous Last Words" already made it big...who's to say "Cancer" or "I Don't Love You" won't make it big. we'll just have to see.

well, it depends on how you look at it, but I would say there kinda pop...but some of the names of the songs are kinda emo, but...just stick with a regular alternative rock.

yeah, he said in an interview (just don't remember what) that its like insulting to classify them under ANY genre because there's no other band that do all the stuff that theyve done (he acknoweledged the fact that theyre thought of as emo but, again he doesn't think that they should be classified) ...straight from his mouth. but i read that he also said (straight from his mouth) that they were "what-else-ya-got-emo" but that's from wikipedia so i dunno if its reliable enuff =]

it doesn't matter what kind of genre you put them under. if you like the music then great, if you don't that's fine too. why do people always try to label a band as one thing or another? they just are what they are. there doesn't have to be name for it.
