In hockey, when people refer to the "NHL", it does not make sense to me. This is because NHL stands for Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, and how could people play in a disease or watch a disease?

When the term NHL makes reference to hockey, it refers to the National Hockey League, which is the top professional hockey league in the world. The National Hockey League was officially founded in November of 1917, thus having been around for almost 90 years. There are no references to any types of diseases in the name of the league, nor in the activities that the league participates in, especially in the playing of the game of hockey within the league. Therefore, with regards to hockey, NHL is an acronym meaning National Hockey League, not Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, my severely confused friend.

Saku Koivu was actually treated for non-hodgkins lymphoma.

to answer your question though, National Hockey League formed long before doctors first recognized and diagnosed Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
