Are you running a wireless router?

If so, then you will need to configure the SSID (network identification), WPA-PSK (this is the most secure option for selecting a password). I also use the following settings:

- turn off ssid broadcast
- setup wireless card access list (you enter the MAC addresses of each network card). The MAC addresses are unique id's of each network card. You can locate them under windows by going to start-run-msinfo32. If you select components-network-adaptor you will see the name of the wireless adaptor and the MAC address just below that.

Setting up an access card list will ensure that only the computers you specify will be able to connect to the router.

If you want to know more about the extended range features etc., netgear offers a good knowledge base section.

A router is a firewall in the basic sense. No computer can connect to you from the outside since all computers on the inside have private ip addresses. You have to initate the connection from the inside. Prevent the computers from the inside from servicing out services to the internet, i.e. kazaa. This is where the danger lies.

One of the safest, secure and easiest things to do with that Netgear is use the MAC table feature. Get all the MAC addresses of your machines - right click on computers (lower right on screen) - choose status - click support tab - write down the MAC address of all your machines - enter them into your table - forbid any other MAC addresses.

The firewall shouldn't block your community. Did you ensure you click the "turn on report and printer sharing" button once you place up your community? flow in to the administration panel and run the community setup wizard back and make certain that button is checked once you end and verify the community back. ensure the firewall is on once you run the wizard.
