Warm onion wrapped in paper towel held against the ear - lay down on it. (Onion draws out stuff.)
Garlic oil.
Heating pad.
I would try these things in that order.

Miss D. as long your an adult it's up to us to see a doctor or not, but keep an eye on your temp, if you get a fever or if the pain changes from the normal ache of an ear infection see a doctor.
If it becomes a stabbing pain, or all the sudden your ear feels swollen or numb get the ER, your ear drum is being affected, and you want help from a professional.
I had a hole in my left ear drum when I was 8 from an ear infection. It healed completely with no noticable hearing loss.
Here's what I do now when I get an ear ache.
Take a garlic supplement with each meal for 2 -3 days. It will help you fight the infection from inside instead of taking an antibiotic.
(If it gets worse see a doctor)
Gargle with warm salt water several times a day, especially before going to bed and first thing in the morning. It will keep the germs down in your mouth and throat and soothes any tissues that be irrated.
Use peroxide in your ears a couple of times a day. You just put a few drops in your ear, let it foam, then turn you head over and rest it on a clean towel or paper towel while you dose the other ear.
Once you have finished with peroxide you can follow it with warm Extra Virgin or Virgin Olive Oil they are the most pure forms. Do the same thing as you did with the peroxide just make sure it's not to hot.
These some things the doctor had me do when I had a hole in my eardrum. I'm sure it's the reason why my eardrum healed with very little scare tissue.
Be really carefully with your hygiene while your sick the more you wash the cleaner you will be. (Don't go nuts and scrub the skin off of anything)
As for the pain, warm compress or a blow drier are great.
Be careful with the ear candles if you try them, people have burnt themselves with them. Best to have a someone who has done it before help. After all you are sticking something in your ear and lighting it a spotter at minimum.
As for blowing smoke in your ear. I bet it works, warm air feels good on a tender ear, but this old wives tale or folk cure is at least 20 years out of date. Even smokers know that it bad for us. Smoke is very drying which is the last thing your irrated ear tissues need.
Don't take a pain killer if you can help it, because they can mask a fever. It's hard to sleep take your favorite OTC pain killer before bed, but use other things during the day to cope if you can.
Get well soon!
If you've still got pain after two days you should go ahead and talk to a doctor and see about an antibiotic. I think people take to many antibiotic, and that isn't a good thing, but if your body doesn't take care of an infection in a reasonable amount of time you might need the added help.
Remember if you end up on an antibiotic, either take a probiotic with it, or start taking one as soon as your finish all the antibiotics. You'll need rebuild the good bacteria in your gut that the antibiotic killed off. Antibiotics don't know the difference between good bugs and bad bugs, and we need the good ones.

Take a 2 - 3 tablespoons of good olive oil and put in in a glass or stainless steel pan. Put in the stove on LOW. Smash a few cloves of garlic into it and let it warm together for about 10 - 20 minutes. DO NOT COOK. DO NOT BRING TO A BOIL. you just want to heat it and get the garlic oil into the olive oil. Now strain it through a coffee strainer or a paper towel. while it is still warm (but not hot) lay on your side and drop 5 - 10 drops into your ear. (easier to have some one help you) place a very warm washcloth over and hold it there about ten minutes. It sometimes help to massage the area. Now do the other ear (the reason for this is because ear infections tend to spread from one to the other, so it is always a good idea to treat BOTH ears) You can do this as often as necessary. The warmth of the oil will melt thru the earwax and the garlic is a disinfectant/antibiotic. PLUS you get to smell like salad dressing! LOL
No, seriously, this really works, I have had four boys and because of this treatment I have never had to take any of them in for an ear infection.
Good luck!

You really DO need to see a Doctor.....you could have infection, perforated eardrum, mastoiditis, TMJ, or a number of other very serious conditions. The ears are WAY too close to the brain to be messing around. If you've already been to the Doctor and it's just a routine ear infection, TEA TREE OIL, warmed, directly into the ear canal and warm, moist compresses applied to that side of your head should fix you right up. Good luck.....I know how miserable earaches can be!!!

warm a large clove of garlic in the microwave until hot but not so hot as to burn you. put it in the cup of your ear and cover with a warm cloth. The heat from both will thin out any built up fluids and the garlic also has natural bacteria killers that will start the healing if infection is present. None of the remidieslisted here or above should replace going to the doctor and getting proper care they are more suitable for helping you get through the night so you do not have to go to an ER

Take your hairdryer-- blow it gently into your ear-- the warm air will soothe the ache.
I had earaches my who chlidhood and we either used a hairdryer or a warm compress. The heat will sooth away the ache.
If the ache lasts longer than a day or two (which could be sinus pressure or water on the ear, etc) then you should really
see a phsyician to ensure its not an infection.
Sorry you don't feel good!!

One good remedy is chopped up garlic soaked in water. Strain off the garlic and use the water. Put a few drops in each ear. Let it drain out after a minute or two. It won't work instantly. It takes time for the infection to heal. The garlic kills the bacteria that causes the infection.

Ahhhhh! I'm sorry. I feel so bad for you. I have had pain in my ears and jaw and teeth for a long time and Doc can't figure out why? (no cavities) It hurts so bad! I take Ibuprofen by the tons! Well, my Gram always said to use sweet oil in your ear. You can try that. Or a warm wash cloth. Some Ibuprofen (motrin) would probably help a little. You probably need to get some antibiotics. Hope you feel better soon!! :(

be reeeeally careful with all the advice about oil!! If your earache is related to earwax then olive oil warmed works brilliantly, but you really should get it checked out, as if it is an infection (in which case it could be oozing or smelling) then oil will aggrevate it and possibly cause more problems. I've suffered with ear problems all my life, and now have perforations in my eardrums, my doctors advice was never to put oil in my ear as it could get infected.

Food grade Hydrogen Peroxide diluted from 35% to 3%. You have to becareful, 35% Hydrogen Peroxide is very corrosive and needs to be handled like acid. Once it's diluded it's perfectly safe. Store the 35% solution in your freezer, it won't freeze. Dilute 1oz. of 35% Hydrogen Peroxide into 10oz of distilled water. This will give you 3.5% solution which is safe for many things, including ear infections. I dilute a bit on my baby bathing water and she has beautiful skin, you may use it to kill the bacteria in your face that may cause pimples.

I just read in someone else's question that if you plug your ear with a clove of garlic and keep it there all night, the pain will be gone by morning.
I've also heard that warm olive oil in the ear works well. I guess it could be baby oil too.
