If you’re asking which individual animal in a particular species, (which puppy in the litter, or which dog in a shelter), let the animal choose you.

Don’t approach the animals; wait to see which one shows the most interest in you.

If the question is which species, do your homework. Read up on the different characteristics, behaviors, and traits and see which best matches your own personality.

Well what do you like? Dogs? Cats? Do you want a pet that can cuddle up with you? One that can go for walks with you?

It all depends on 1. why you are getting a pet and 2. the amount of work you want to put forth.

Dogs require regular outings for the purpose of going potty. They also like to play outside. They require more maintenance overall than cats. They can be good alarm systems if they learn to bark when strangers are where they shouldn't be. They are loyal. Most dogs will protect their owners instinctively. The small dogs will try, but they tend to do best at making noise.

Cats do not have to go out to potty. A real plus when it is below zero. They also require little in the way of exercise. You can leave them overnight and they will normally do just fine alone. They are cuddly and will like nothing better than annoying you at the most inopportune times. They are affectionate.....when they choose to be.

I could not survive without my cats. They are my friends, my companions, my barometer.

I've also had dogs that I would give anything to have back. I guess I've had the best of both types of pets. I also had horses, but they weren't house broke.

You might also expose yourself to cats and dogs before getting one to make sure you are not allergic to either.

Happy searching.....:)

I think It depends on what you are willing to do to take care of one. If it's something like a rabbit, you will need to build a pen. If it's something like a chicken, you need to make sure there are no dogs around. If it's an indoor cat, you'll have to clean a litter box. Fish are fairly easy to tend to, but don't provide companionship the same as a cat or a dog. I myself have cats and dogs. My Siamese cats are very loud and demanding. They like to "talk," but they are very affectionate. The best pet that I've ever had is my chihuahua, Tinker. She is great. She scratces on the door to go in and out and she understands a lot of words such as "go see," "let's go bye bye," "stay," "come here," "move," "do you need to go outside?," "come in the house," and lots more. She is very intelligent and very very loving. The only bad thing is that she barks at anyone who comes over, but the barking stops soon after they come in the house. I thought about getting a pig recently. I've heard that they are more intelligent than dogs. I hope I've helped you. Good luck finding the right kind of pet.

You can usually sense a special kind of connection. Like the animal does something , looks at you a certain way that draws you in. Good luck.

Go to a shelter, and look around. See what kinda POPS out in your head when you look at it. I personally like dogs, but cats are cool too.
