I'm 51, male, white. 20 years experience in health insurance administration in claims. No management experience. Willing to devote 10 years of dedication. Thinking that 35K per year is a threshold. Smart. Computer savey. Anyone got advice or recommendations on how to break out of this rut. I don't welcome get rich quick or praying to Jesus. Just good advice from experience. Thanks.

I'm not sure from your question if you're in a rut because you want a career change out of claims administration, or if you've been laid off at 51 and want back in. I'll guess that it's the former....if that's so, I'd suggest taking some evening classes in a field that interests you. Night classes are often full of adults pursuing career advancement or changes - you may build a network to help you transition to something new. Professional organizations are another good resource - join one in your desired field and you'll have a network of folks that can give you advice, web sites with articles and resources that could be of benefit, and so on.

A good resource for career changes is the book "What Color Is Your Parachute." It's the classic how-to manual for what I believe you're describing. Good luck!

Ever thought about working on the sales side of the insurance game?

Or even joining the state ombudsman office for managed care? (At least, that's what they call it in VA; most states have something similar.)

It all depends on what direction you want to go, of course. But both of those things would tie in to your previous experience, while still allowing you to do something different on a daily basis.

I came across Adsense. Its free to do. I started it while I had my nine to five job and worked on a few blogs and then started websites as time went by. Now I stopped my nine to five and work on this from home. It takes minimal effort on my part. I learn everything I can about websites and promotion and put it in practice. One of those is in the source box that explains all. Good luck.
