Your teacher isn't dumb. She (or he) is trying to get you to think in concrete terms to understand an abstract concept. It's a bit of a leap, but you're at the right age to do it, and if you do it, you'll be better off for it, the rest of your life.
How's this. Your grandmother put aside a certain amount of money for you when you were born, and adds 100 dollars every year. You can have it when you turn 18, on condition that you figure out how much she first put aside, when you were born. Do the math. Find the y intercept.
