The backyard is enclosed with a chain link fence. Without removing it, how can I add / attach wood fencing, for privacy?

It needs to add height to the existing fence- and provide privcy from the ground up.

attach a Planck fence rite to it and use a strut rite across the top of the fence to hold the boards. use carriage bolts to hold the strut to the fence and then use deck screws to hold the boards to the strut

If it's chain link you can get some of those vinyl slats and lace through the chain link for privacy, unless the fence isn't tall enough then you may need to build a wood fence in front and next to the chain link. If you choose the slats you can get them at most hardware stores, if not there a store that sells fences and landscaping materials.

There are wood inserts for chain link fence and it is easy to simply slide the pieces into the fence.

You will have improved privacy, but not perfict.

Another thing that I have seen people do to gain privacy is to wire bamboo fencing to the chain link fence. It will only last a few years, but it lends a tropical flair to a yard.

Good luck

You can buy wooden slats that slide in from the top. They're about 2" wide and the height of the fence. There will be slits between slats where the fence links together, but it will provide more privacy than you currently have.

You can either put up stockade or board on board fencing right along the chain link fence. You possibly could use 4x8 sheets of lattice and attach to the chain link.

Privacy slats are available at any big-box hardware store. Hedges are good too.
