Just be pleasantly persistent. You can probably get a job at the mall, just apply everywhere and check back with them. Don't show up with your friends, be professional.

Just try not to get discouraged. Remember that there are alot of other young people applying for the same jobs as you are, and they cant choose everyone. It is common for places like fast food places and grocery stores to hire students without work history. Just be friendly and honest. If you get an interview then do your best to convince them that you really want the job and will work hard. Keep trying, and eventually something will come along.

First of all review your apperance. get a haircut, clean up, cut back on makeup, kept is simple. when you go out, clean clothes, keep it conservative, no chains, rips, tee shirts with sayings, the like, clean shoes. even better brush teeth and clean under your finger nails. remember you are representing the owner, and he does not want a jerk infront of his clients. be pollite, listen to what the employer is telling you about the job, ask questions, show your paying attention. Have a list of 4 or 5 referneces with you, so you do not have to remember them. If you don't have experience, tell the person, talk about the things you do a home to help out. ask for a more entry position and then work your way up, bus tables vs waiter for a month or two. show you are willing to learn the ropes. be on time, if your going to be late, call and explain, but only do it once. its easier to replace you then try to find a sub. have a chearful attitude. talk to customers, say hi and thanks for shoping, buying or eating at where ever. listen to the customer, take time to make sure you have their concerns met, after all that is why you hav e the job. do some volunteer work, show you have some gumption. never take food, without permission, its his product not yours. if youcan help out once and awhile and put in some overtime do it. shows you care. pitch in, offer to help, ask what else your can do. get the job and stick with it, if you have problems talk to manager about it, first , dont grouse to employees. don't chew gum, speak good language, no cussing, think about the company first. but remember that working in the mail room, or making fries is all right for a beginner, make sure they understand that you want more.

Just apply at all the places you can and make sure you call and check in with them to see if they looked at your application. Eventually you will get hired, even if its at a crappy job you will get job experience which will increase your chances of getting another job.
Also it is always a bonus if you know people, if you have a friend or a family member who can get you a job where they work is a good place to start.

Try Mc Donald's, Burger King, places like that. Also, try Safeway-everyone starts out as a courtesy clerk, but depending on how well you do, you may work into another dept. in the store. Or try other grocery stores in your area. Plus the food courts, etc. I wish you the best. Oh yes, for working around food (cooking, etc.) you will need a food handler's card, good for two years. Easy to get. Please contact the cunty heatlh dist. you reside in, find out how much it costs, and schedule to take the "lesson"/test. In other words, they let you know what is correct in food preparation, etc. before you take the test to get the card. Take care.

The food courts will not have tips .. you should check with fine dining restaurants and inquire about bus boy positions and/or waitstaff positions. These have tips and its something you can do part-time. You can also check with your local pizza place (dine-in). That would be a great place to work. Also try the theatres in your area. That was my first postion and I loved it. Plus you get to watch all the movies for free.
Good luck

Look for jobs that say "Entry-Level" or "Will-Train"
I started at a grocery store bagging groceries at 15 years old. You cant shoot for the starts your first time around. You look for something that will bring in money.
also you should call a few days later and ask about your application. it shows them that you are serious about getting a job.
