the speed at which the river flows

The velocity of a river is the speed at which water flows along it. The velocity will change along the course of any river, and is determined by factors such as the gradient ( how steeply the river is losing height), the volume of water, the shape of the river channel and the amount of friction created by the bed, rocks and plants.

River Velocity

River Gradient | Channel Roughness | Channel Shape
The three factors that influence the velocity of a river are the river gradient
,channel roughness and channel shape.

the speed the river flows. It varies at different locations in the river..being fastest generally in the middle (both horizontally and vertically) and slower near the banks. Like any other velocity it is units of distance per time. Small turbine like instruments or other devices are used to measure it. (Sorry can't remember the names of them). A river with a low velocity your boat would float slowly donw, high velocity...more quickly. (Roger B gives the factors that influence velocity..like any other velocity..friction, gravity)

This is not to be confused with rate of flow which is volume per unit of time. It is a function of the profile of the stream bed and velocity.
