Luke, that's a nice trip.
If it is interesting and unusual sights you would like to visit on the trip, take time to check out this site.
Called Roadside America and searchable by state, it features all the oddball attractions.
You know, the biggest ball of twine/house mad of beer cans type attraction.
Some of these attractions are worth going a bit off your planned route for.
I've started you at Connecticut's page:
http://www.roadsideamerica.com/map/ct.html

May I suggest you buy yourselves a Rand McNally Atlas (in the hand, book-size).
In addition to mileages it has scenic routes, national parks, state forests and important attractions all mapped.

There is plenty of beautiful nature along the way. When you take I-81 thru Virginia you will be next to Shenandoah Nat. park. Its a nice mountain top drive. It takes several hours to drive thru the whole park, maybe you could just see some of it. If you really like mountains, detour south before you get to Knoxville and go to Smoky Mt. Nat. park. At the very least, you should go up Lookout mountain when you get to Chatanooga, TN. Have fun!
