If their WiFi is wide open, it must mean that they want to share it.
Right?
I mean, the piece of equipment came with a user manual and directions for setting it up, and I'm /sure/ they read them and decide to leave everything wide up.
Nice person!

This area of law is still very grey.
If you intentionally use someone else's network, it is technically Electronic Trespass. NOW....the caveat: If that someone left their network open and is advertising (as your laptop picked up) the availability of the network.......it is just like putting an COME ON IN sign on the front door
If your intentions were innocent, I wouldn't worry obout the usage of the wireless connection. HOWEVER....This was prosecuted once that I know of in Florida

Yes its "legal" If some one you know has a wireless connection its fine even some local stores give it free. If your son let s you it's fine but don't do it on a random person, and ask them first, if they say yes go for it.

Yeah, it was likely a neighbor.
It is not likely illegal, unless there is a local ordinance.
The neighbor has not secured their wireless internet and likely doesn;t know how.
In a way it is poor taste to use it. It is kinda like going into a neighbors open garage door and using his hose to water your plants. He was stupid to leave the door open, but that doesn't give you the right to use his stuff...even tho it really doesn;t cost him anything.
You may find access to private computer files on his system...that would be like theft to mess with them, IMHO.
Like taking stuff from his open garage door.
